hunters, chambray, and cowls

DSC03604
During my February budget post I mentioned that Sam and I were going to Chicago together and that I planned on purchasing a few items as a part of my tax return that I was allowing myself to spend. Well, some asshat stole her wallet the day before we were supposed to go, so our trip fell through. I was determined to get rain boots though, so I went to a local shoe store to figure out what size to order.

I realized that due to marching band calves (no for real, that's a thing), the traditional rain boots were not going to fit me properly - the tightness around the calf made them awkwardly squish down in the middle. I then debated between getting the Huntress which has a thicker shaft all the way down, and the originals with an adjustable back. I ended up deciding to get the adjustable ones as I think they create a nicer line (as much of a nice line as rain boots can make) as I have relatively slim ankles compared to my calves.

I'm really happy that I finally have a nice pair of rain boots as the last 2 pairs from Target tore within weeks. I even took the pups on an extra long walk after work so we could splash in all of the puddles!

and don't worry, I didn't wear these all day at work ;)

In a chambray popover update, Ellie mentioned to me on this post that J.Crew Factory has a similar version to the J.Crew version for about half of the price. J.Crew Factory is currently running a 30% off sale (with code STYLESCORE ) so the shirt is around $35 now! I put in my order this morning - I'm hoping it's "the one". As soon as it comes I plan on doing a post about all the different versions out there.

I highly recommend everyone to go out and buy a cowlneck/turtle neck sweater. You can spend all day like this and no one can question it.

  2. I love that you used the word "asshat". And I love that I know how you said that word in your head as you typed it out, because it's exactly how I said it to myself as I read it.

Love the boots, thinking about ordering that chambray shirt, and thank you for ending your post with a turtle picture.

Great outfit! And I can't believe you do your pictures on your own! They are good!!!

  6. This outfit is so pretty! I really love the soft color of the sweater (and how you so perfectly wore it in your last picture haha).

  7. I wish I could wear a cowl sweater, I am too short for them I think. This is one of those times I am extra jealous of the tall out there! You look so cozy, and I love the Hunters.

  8. I am ticked I have not seen that sweater at my local gap because I would have purchased it immediately. LOVE IT! Your whole look is fab and digging the new rain boots :)

  10. I have Hunter boots in blue and I absolutely adore them! I could easily have them in several colors but my wallet wouldn't like that. Adore the sweater too!

  11. YAY for the first post with the Hunter boots! Good thing you tried them on, those crazy marching band calves could have ruined the fun!

And I'm SO glad I'm not the only one that hides in cowlneck sweaters! I do that sometimes in scarves too. ;-)

  15. Okay, that last photo made me snicker at my desk. Hilarious! Also, I'm with you on the large calves with rainboots issue. I always look like I have on some weird version of knickers when I wear my rain boots with dress pants because of the lack of room around my calves.

  16. You look so cute and more power to ya for braving the cold for outfit pics! Brrrr

  19. Hahahaha....I'm rolling on the floor laughing at "asshat"!

I love your outfit and your boots.

  20. Bummer about the wallet thief...that stinks! Camel is my go to color for my green Hunters...and I may even wear them when it's not raining here. haha.

  21. So cute! Love the adjustable back to the hunters. It adds character :)

  23. I love cowl necks sweaters. I find them great for balancing out pear shapes (looks at own thighs pointedly). That colour really compliments you and the fit is seriously flattering.

  24. Those boots are lovely! And those sweaters are SO perfect for nuzzling in like a turtle! And about chambray, I have tried on about a million different kinds then I saw a dotted chambray one at J.Crew Factory. I ordered mine a couple days before the 30% off sale so was pissed when I saw that, but customer service agreed to give me the 30% back! Happy dance! Hope both of our chamrays (what's the plural for that?) work out!

  25. You look awesome in this outfit! Loving the new boots. I would love a pair or rain boots. I think about it almost every time it rains :)

  26. I recently bought my first pair of Hunter Boots, and I LOVE them. I think I almost look forward to a little rain these days so I can break them out!

  27. Hunter boots are on my closet gaps list I need to fill. I feel that it seems silly to buy them but when it rains I always wish I had a pair! :)

  28. First of all - that sky! What a gorgeous time of day!

As for your boots - gosh I love my Hunters - glad you found some you like! And good to know about the J Crew Factory chambray - going to check it out now!

  29. Lol, marching band calves are totally a thing, and I have them too. I think I ordered and returned 4 pairs of riding boots this winter because I couldn't get them zipped past my ankles. I've been coveting a pair of Hunters for a while now, so I'll be sure to look for the adjustable ones -thanks for the tip!

JCrew Factory is amazing. Probably my favorite clothing store, the Charley sweaters are my staple top.

  30. You look adorable! Those J Crew Factory Popovers are my life - have you seen the oxford ones? So soft and lush, yum yum!

I am jealous of your Hunter boots. I went for the patent with mine and I think it may be a fail. Also, I never did marching band. just have heavy calves no matter what I do so mine are a bit squeezy on the calves. I love them but I think the matte black would have been the better choice, in retrospect. Oh well, there's always next Winter, right? Plus, I live in CA. I don't *really* need them except for when we go to Tahoe, haha.

  31. Yay for your Hunter boots! I am so bummed - it hasn't rained since I got mine :( I'm so glad you are happy with yours too!

  32. Wooo you look so cozy in your new jumper! Marching band calves is probably similar to the issue I have with my runners calves? Skin-tight skinny jeans feel like they are stopping my circulation (if I can get them on). On the plus side, it's always nice and quite funny when people compliment you on your calves specifically as they are quite, erm, large and muscly?! :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Such a cute outfit and your Hunter boots are perfect! I love the color, they will go with so much. And I have ginormous calves, most boots don't fit me (I like to say they are muscular and perhaps they were this way from running so much in high school?) The other weekend I borrowed boots from my friend and she had to help me zip them up (a pair that literally hangs off her calves). Oh well. I own a pair of rain boots in brown with a blue plaid top, so pretty neutral, but I don't wear them like I used to on campus :( Only on the weekends...

AND I LOVE THIS COWL NECK sweater! SO cute. I have done that all day in one I own ;)

  35. ASS SHOT!

and I love cowl sweaters but I seem to always get crumbs caught in it when I'm eating so I have to shake it out when I'm done. Or I can find little morsels of cookies hours later when I start to get hungry again :)

AND now I want a chambray popover but since I can't afford one at the moment (even at $35) I'll be living vicariously through you. Just don't go massacre it with a cheese grater, ok?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I have the Huntress wellies and I wish I had know about/they made the adjustable originals! I always feel like the Huntress boots look super short in comparison to the tall ones.... and then I see some itty bitty girl in original talls with room to spare and I'm just like UGH why do I try!

Having larger-than-normal calves is such a pain.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well, hell, now I obviously need a cowl neck sweater. You look wonderful!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yay for your new boots, they are so worth it! So sorry your plans fell through, totally sucks!

  39. You'll have to let me know when you come down to Chicago! Wait... is that creepy? Is it creepier than me saying vagina on your instagram? Um, about the boots... I have what is considered wide calves (which is a shame because I always thought my calves were one of the smaller parts of my body) so I can't do a lot of tall shaft boots. My hunter's are shoter... they hit above the ankle, but before the widest part of my calf. stupid wide calves.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Ahh! I totally have the same problem with my calves! They are just so much bigger than the rest of my legs, it creates a real problem when I'm looking for boots.. or even pants some times. Glad someone else out there has to deal with the craziness that is big calves!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Girl you look amazing and I would totally walk around in public as you are in your last photo! It's cold!!! And here in Indy it is so wet! which reminds me I need a killer pair of rain boots!

  42. Oh my gosh - I can totally attest to marching band calves. Combine that with volleyball thighs, and consider finding anything for your lower half nearly impossible! I will definitely have to check out the adjustable boots! Thanks for the tip!
