In school, we spend a lot of time learning how our bodies develop, and how in less than a year, a few cells turn into a human being. There are literally a million different things that can go wrong in this developmental process, but I've always found that the most traumatizing of these to be right at the end, during the birthing process. Infections and certain trauma can be managed or eliminated with the appropriate medical care, but that is something that 40 million women every year don't have access to. More than 800 women a day die during the birthing process, which is completely heartbreaking.
TOMS's newest One for One program is looking to provide a safer birthing experience for women all over the world. With the purchase of one of the new TOMS bags, TOMS will be provide birthing kits and training to birth attendants in developing countries. I think this is such a wonderful initiative, and was honored to be asked to help spread the word. I think their new line of bags is not only beautiful, but you can't help but feel good about the fact that it also makes such a difference in another woman's life.
